Massive pericardial effusion: two rare aetiologies in one patient
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present the case of a 64-year-old, immunocompetent woman with untreated hypothyroidism, who was admitted with massive pericardial effusion. She had no clinical signs or echocardiographic evidence of pericardial tamponade. To our surprise, cultures of pericardial fluid grew salmonella enteritidis. Hypothyroidism is a known, but rare cause of pericardial effusion. Due to its insidious onset and slow fluid accumulation, it may develop unnoticed by clinicians. Pericardial infection with nontyphoidal salmonella is an extremely exceptional finding in immunocompetent subjects. Because preexisting pericardial fluid acts as a culture medium, it might rather be the result of superinfection of preexisting pericardial effusion during bacteraemia than primary salmonella pericarditis.

Tuberculous Pericarditis Causing Severe Pericardial Effusion: A Case Study
Aims Tuberculous pericarditis is present in only one to two percent of the tuberculosis cases, i.e. considered rare. The disease is responsible for 4% and 7% of acute pericarditis and cardiac tamponade cases, respectively. Moreover, these conditions are associated with hazardous side effects. Thus, timely and precise diagnosis of the disease could prevent such complications. Case report We rep...

Background: Pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade are the rare complications of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC insertion) in extreme low birth weight infants. In this regard, paying attention to these complications is of utmost importance, because they can result in infant death. Case report: The case of our infant is a sa...

An unusual case of a hypothyroid patient with huge pericardial effusion due to Hashimoto's thyroiditis is reported. Cardiac tamponade occurred during admission. Eight hundred milliliters of pericardial effusion was withdrawn by pericardiocentesis. Even after successful replacement of thyroid hormone, she had recurrent effusion two years later. Refractory pericardial effusion is a rare complicat...
متن کامل[Massive pericardial effusion as initial manifestation of hypothyroidism].
The aim of this study is to report a rare case of massive pericardial effusion as initial manifestation of hypothyroidism. A previously healthy 21-year-old female patient suddenly began presenting dyspnea at rest and lower limb edema. Routine laboratory tests performed at admission showed hypothyroidism (TSH 146.14 mUI/L) and echocardiography showed significant pericardial effusion. Therapy was...

ABSTRACT Systemic sclerosis classified to limited and diffuse types. Skin and visceral involvement is more sever and progressive in diffuse form and also pericardial effusion is more frequent in diffuse type of disease.
